The Merlion (Malay: Singa-Laut)
Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". Merlion is one of the icons in Singapore, the unique creature consist of a head of a lion and a body of a fish. It is said to be that the fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called “Temasek” which means "sea town" in Javanese.
The lion head represents Singapore's original name—Singapura —meaning "lion city”. Besides being a tourism marketing icon of Singapore, the Merlion is also used to symbolize Singapore in art and popular culture nowadays and also used as a mascot of Singapore.
