Hari Raya - Ketupat
Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa, is the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Many Malay-Muslim families in Singapore will start the day with a trip to the mosque and then visit their parents. Visits are also made to see relatives where bonding occurs over delicious home-cooked feasts. A must-have delicacy among the feasts is the ketupat. Ketupat, originating from Malaysia and Indonesia, is also served during Malay weddings. Ketupat is a diamond-shaped rice cake, made of tightly packed cooked rice and wrapped in woven coconut leaves. In Singapore, it is usually a side-dish to the many sweet, savoury and rich foods commonly found at these happy celebrations. Ketupat cases woven from colourful ribbons also typically adorn Malay homes during Hari Raya Puasa, giving the occasion an even more festive atmosphere.
